Analysis:

The Great Dictator is a movie by Charlie Chaplin. It is funny but also serious. The story is about a Jewish barber and a dictator called Adenoid Hynkel. The barber is kind, but the dictator is cruel and wants power. Chaplin plays both characters. The movie talks about war and power but also about love and hope. The message is still important today. The final speech is serious and emotional. The barber, who looks like the dictator, talks to many people. Before this, the real dictator was arrested by mistake, so the barber takes his place. He does not act like the dictator but talks about peace and freedom. He says people should not hate each other. He wants a better world. This scene is very important because it gives hope. After this, people listen to him. His friend Hannah hears him on the radio and feels happy. The scene shows that words can change the world.

Monologue text: I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone – if possible – Jew, Gentile – black man – white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness – not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.
