Movie name: Frances Ha
Character name: Frances Halladay
Monologue Text: I want this one moment. It’s what I want in a relationship, which may explain why I am single now, ha-ha. It’s kind of hard to… It’s that thing when you’re with someone, and you love them and they know it, and they love you and you know it… but it’s a party… and you’re both talking to other people, and you’re laughing and shining… and you look across the room and catch each others eyes… but – but not because you’re possessive, or it’s precisely sexual… but because… that is your person in this life.
Analysis:
The tone of scene is emotional. Frances Halladay is a woman who live in newyork and she is 27. She wants to dancer but her career is not well for this. She is being abandoned by her homemate Sophie. She thought that sophie is her best friend. However, sophie doesn’t feel same about frances. Frances questions her identity, her pleasures, her dreams and her loneliness. She feels lost and she doesn’t feel sense of belonging for anywhere. Before this scene, Frances attends a party where everyone belongs somewhere and they are perfect adults but frances is not. After this scene, Frances’s life getting worse. She remains completely alone, can’t find a job etc. She have a major mental breakdown. Then, she suddenly achieves managing her own life. She starts dancing again. This scene is significant for the story since she talks about desire to belong and have a deep bound. It is a complaint. The monologue reflects us the depth and inner world of character. Furthermore, scene has black and white effect. It gives a depressive vibe. With the monologue, we see the perspective in relationships of character. We can understand why she stays away from serious relationships and bonding with others. She use gestures and mimics too much. She express her feelings intensely. She is a weird but relatable character if you feel lonely and odd. In my opinion, we can find a part of us in her inner world and expressions. Especially this scene can be meaningful for some people.
